Lucas van Beveren

Automation Engineer

Lucas builds and programs machine controls. His work includes electrical assembly, PLC and HMI software, motion, robotics and vision. His projects use B&R, Siemens, Hitachi, Exor and CODESYS.

Experience

Lucas carries out projects independently and works at companies including Klaas Puul, Blom Opmeer, Totech and Seed Processing in Enkhuizen. His work covers machine control, sensor integration, operator interfaces and troubleshooting. The projects below are a selection from his wider practical experience.

Lucas in practice

From sensors and software to a working machine.

A robot has to move at the right moment. A measurement has to tell the operator something useful. In these three projects, Lucas connects the controls to what physically happens in the installation.

B&R · Robotics · Graduation project at GCG

Vision-guided pick-and-place robot cell

A robot, a moving conveyor and vision in one control system.

Lucas’s contribution

Lucas converted an existing robot installation into a working demonstration and test cell. He integrated a Comau Racer 7, conveyor tracking, a B&R Smart Sensor and HMI in one central B&R control environment, without a separate robot controller.

Implementation and next steps

His work included modular software, position correction during robot movement, calibration, alarm management, and developing and testing safety functions. A Smart Camera, product buffer and MES connection are described as potential future extensions.

Siemens · TIA Portal · IO-Link

Siemens measurement system for production

Turning sensor readings into information for the operator.

Lucas’s contribution

Lucas delivered a PLC/HMI solution for measuring pleat height and pack width. The application combines a Siemens S7-1200 G2 with IO-Link sensors, PROFINET communication and an operator interface.

For the operator

Measurement processing, limit monitoring, alarms and calibration connect the sensors to useful operator information.

CODESYS · IFM · Earlier graduation project

Test rig for electric and hydraulic actuation

Investigating the position control of a suction nozzle valve on a test rig.

Lucas’s contribution

For his earlier graduation project Lucas designed, built and programmed a test rig to control the position of a suction nozzle valve. He wrote the PLC and display software in CODESYS and connected the IFM components through CAN-bus/CANopen.

Earlier experience

His work also covered cabinet design, wiring, electrical and hydraulic drawings and comparative testing. This experience predates his work at GCG.
